21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John C Maxwell

My next project will be to review the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John C Maxwell and relate it to a practical activity for teaching kids to develop their leadership. Firstly here is a video on exactly who John C. Maxwell is and the impact that his book has had.

First I will outline what his 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership are then I will break it down and run through approx one law every couple of days. I am in no way affiliated with John C. Maxwell, these are my interpretations and learnings from his book.
1. The law of the Lid - Leadership Ability Determines a Person's Level of Effectiveness.
2. The Law of Influence - The true measure of Leadership is Influence - Nothing More, Nothing Less
3. The Law of Process - Leadership Develops Daily, Not in a Day
4. The Law of Navigation - Anyone can Steer the Ship, but it takes a Leader to chart the course
5. The Law of E.F. Hutton - When the real leader speaks, People Listen
6. The Law of Solid Ground - Trust is the Foundation of Leadership
7. The Law of Respect - People naturally follow Leaders stronger than themselves
8. The Law of Intuition - Leaders Evaluate everything with a leadership bias
9. The Law of Magnetism - Who you are is who you attract
10. The Law of Connection - Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand
11. The Law of the Inner Circle - A leaders potential is determined by those closest to him
12. The Law of Empowerment - Only Secure Leaders give powers to others
13. The Law of Reproduction - It takes a leader to raise up a leader
14. The Law of Buy-In - People buy into the leader, Then the Vision
15. The Law of Victory - Leaders find a way for the team to win
16. The Law of the Big Mo - Momentum is a Leaders Best friend
17. The Law of Priorities - Leaders understand that activity is not necessarily accomplishment
18. The law of Sacrifice - A leader must give up to go up
19. The Law of Timing - When to lead is as important as what to do and where to go
20. The law of Explosive Growth - To add growth, lead followers - To multiply, lead leaders
21. The Law of Legacy - A leaders lasting value is measured by succession

Mum's Prayer to Santa

Dear Santa,

I've been a good mum all year. I've fed, cleaned and cuddled my children on demand, visited the doctor's office more than my doctor, sold sixty-two cases of choc.bars to raise money to plant a shade tree on the school playground.

I was hoping you could spread my list out over several Christmases, since I had to write this letter with my son's red crayon, on the back of a receipt in the laundry room between cycles, and who knows when I'll find anymore free time in the next 18 years.

Here are my Christmas wishes:
I'd like a pair of legs that don't ache (in any colour, except purple, which I already have) and arms that don't hurt or flap in the breeze; but are strong enough to pull my screaming child out of the lolly aisle in the grocery store.

I'd also like a waist, since I lost mine somewhere in the seventh month of my last pregnancy.

If you're hauling big ticket items this year I'd like fingerprint resistant windows and a radio that only plays adult music; a television that doesn't broadcast any programs containing talking animals; and a refrigerator with a secret compartment behind the crisper where I can hide to talk on the phone.

On the practical side, I could use a talking doll that says, "Yes, Mummy" to boost my parental confidence, along with two kids who don't fight and three pairs of jeans that will zip all the way up without the use of power tools.

I could also use a recording of Tibetan monks chanting "Don't eat in the living room" and "Take your hands off your brother," because my voice seems to be just out of my children's hearing range and can only be heard by the dog.

If it's too late to find any of these products, I'd settle for enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair in the same morning, or the luxury of eating food warmer than room temperature without it being served in a Styrofoam container.

If you don't mind, I could also use a few Christmas miracles to brighten the holiday season. Would it be too much trouble to declare tomato sauce a vegetable? It will clear my conscience immensely. It would be helpful if you could coerce my children to help around the house without demanding payment as if they were the bosses of an organized crime family.

Well, Santa, the buzzer on the dryer is ringing and my son saw my feet under the laundry room door. I think he wants his crayon back. Have a safe trip and remember to leave your wet boots by the door and come in and dry off so you don't catch cold.

Help yourself to cookies on the table but don't eat too many or leave crumbs on the carpet.

Yours Always, MUM...!

P.S. One more thing...you can cancel all my requests if you can keep my children happy, healthy and always believing.

Andrew Fuller Presentation

Attached is a link to Andrew Fuller's home page.

As a clinical psychologist, Andrew Fuller works with many schools and communities in Australia and internationally, specialising in the wellbeing of young people and their families.

Great talker with some very amusing slides to capitivate the crowds energy.

He discussed:-

The concept of "resilience" offers a coherent framework for the creation of schools that are sensitive to the developmental needs of young people and their teachers. As Andrew describes, resilience is "the happy knack of being able to bungy jump through the pitfalls of life - to rise above adversity and obstacles."

That made us wonder if he was talking about our kids or ourselves.

Major learnings for me (He provided the seed, and below is my interpretation as it relates to me:-
1. Stop saying "I am too busy" - It effectively means you are too busy for the person you are talking to. Also have an attitude of gratitiude, you have all the time you need. (you have the same time as everybody)

2. Hold families rituals that your family can rely on. Be it Pizza night, walk night, games night. Frank Lowy got his family over for dinner every Friday night. This will stick in people's memories. eg. Kids will say when they grow up "Dad use to make us always go camping together." It was a reliable, strong connection and grounding with their growth.

3. What is done in the 15 minutes before going to bed is most deeply cemented in the memory. Good ideas for this fifteen minutes includes:-
a. tell your kids you love them
b. communicate with them about life, ups & downs, wins and losses, goals
c. read a book

4. Kids need 9.25 hours sleep a night. Take TV's, Computers, Mobile Phones out of their rooms.

5. Give kids a taste of success and reinforce the feeling to make them pursue it again.

6. Play games. Teaches kids sequencing, numbers, reading, communication, participation but most importantly how to lose. If they don't learn to lose they will not be equipped to deal with losses and disappointments in life. Side benefit of playing games with your kids is the connection you share.

7. For breakfast give high Protein and low sugars.

8. Help your kids identify the difference between fairweather friends and true friends. They then have a language to process the disapointment.

Remember. Enjoy . http://youtube.com/watch?v=pRWmISaz-pk

Summary:- You are not able to get extra-ordinary results from ordinary efforts.

Important lessons to Teach your kids (Yes in the 15 min just before bed):-
1. Anything is Possible
2. Nothing is Easy
3. When things are difficult see rule 1
4. When things are easy see rule 2

Myspace Link

Howdy,

I just created myspace account and I am looking for new friends. I thought it would be great if you can post a picture of yourself on my myspace site, so I can put a name and a face to the event, as I am sure we will all meet up again soon, somewhere.

Also I just found the spell check function which should be great for late night typing issues like yesterday. Sorry.

Also does anyone know if in myspace, I can do a quick "poke" like in Facebook to ask people in Facebook to be your friend?

Cheers Todd.

Love to hear what you have achieved.

Does anyone want a copy of my notes from the weekend

Hi Everyone,

One an absolutely amazing weekend and a great experience. You now how some times you can go to seminars, get overwhelmed and promise yourself, you will go straight home and sort out all your notes and make a huge list of prioritised to do list and methodically or not make sure that all of the things get crossed off.

That was me before the weekend. I have received overwhelm from the best of them and done nothing.

This weekend I got. Just do it and do it now. There will not be any more time later. Just get into it, jsut start, As JP said just commit to doing a little bit each day and do it.

Hence I am busting a gut, but tomorrow I can step forward from a new place.

I loved the weekend, and loved the results I got.

I got direction on my strategy:- A book on raising Leaders in your kids. Thanks to Dave the first two chapters are drafted and the Table of Contents is complete.

You can check out my http://leadershipforkids.blogspot.com .

There was some members of the group that I chatted with about Leadership and Development for Kids and I would love to make contact with more people that are interested in providing feedback, input, JV, Affiliate or even just words of encouragement. So leave your thoughts I would love to hear them.

I have now completed compiling my notes from the whole weekend and would love to share them with everyone, so if you would like a copy please click here and I will send you a copy.
